Good time to brush off your exercise regime and get outside Now that winter is gone, the gloomy skies are getting brighter and the vegetation is blooming again. It’s a good time to get outside and start exercising. We all need to work out all year round, but the colder it gets, the more difficult it is to get up and exercise. Well, now that spring is here, it’s time to put in more effort and to accomplish your fitness goals. Why is spring a great time to exercise outside? First of all, spring provides the perfect weather for outdoor workouts. Scientists have observed that exercising outdoors comes with a number of benefits that aren’t as pronounced when we workout indoors. A study that was published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology indicated that outdoor workouts are more energizing and revitalizing than indoor workouts. Other experts have also observed that you are more likely to push yourself harder during outdoor workouts than during indoor workouts. For instance, if you are jogging on a treadmill, it’s easy to stop because all you have to do is to step off from the machine. However, if you are jogging outside this spring and you feel like stopping, you still have to run all the way back home.

If you want to take certain classes at the gym or take part in guided group exercises, it may be important to check the credentials of the instructors. If you intend to engage personal instructors during your workouts, ensure that they are available and that they have the particular expertise that you are looking for. Try to find a gym that offers you access to instructors and personal trainers without much extra cost.   Other things you can consider There are other small details that can make a particular gym a better fit for you. A gym may have better standards of hygiene, convenient parking, nicer workout music, or even extra membership privileges. Your ultimate decision may come down to which gym offers free shampoo and extra towels in the showers, or how nice the other gym members seem. Whatever gym you choose, make sure that the environment is good enough to keep you motivated, and committed to your workout plans.

What Is Beyond Meditation?

Do you meditate to keep yourself on track? For many years whenever I negotiated my job conditions with a new employer, I also negotiated time to go to my weekly personal meditation session with my then mentor. A lot of employers found it a little strange, but I never had anyone say no!!! The funny thing was, despite my commitment to the meditation cause, meditation didn’t really ever work for me in the ways I hoped. I spent hours a day meditating for many years and there was very little to show for it – I was still the world’s most incredible over-thinker… and I still did not have the space and peace that I desired. The Huffington Post talks about the daily habits of wealthy successful business leaders who use meditation and mindfulness techniques to superpower their capacities… that was my target with meditation too– until I became aware of even more creative, generative possibilities that took a lot less time and gave me a lot more ease. Here’s the thing… meditation is designed to give your brain space. To stop you thinking. To have you just BE. We have been presented with one basic way to meditate – sit still and empty your mind.

Research has been reported to show a relationship between the amount of time spent sitting on a daily basis and rate of disease and morbidity. It also shows the length of time spent uninterrupted (that is without getting up and moving) to be a factor. Now there are reports of research that concludes the links are weak. What are we to believe and more importantly what are the best habits we can form to support our health and longevity? What does science say about prolonged sitting? Most researchers agree that the inactivity causes chronic illnesses, and it could lead to premature death. In fact, there is evidence that indicates that premature death is 8 times more likely to occur among people who generally lead sedentary lives than those who are generally physically active. In these studies, the term sedentary is broadly defined, and it refers to all the time that is spent sitting on the sofa, driving or riding around, and working behind a desk. A study done in the US found that most grownups spend close to 10 hours sitting, and the negative health implications of this prolonged period of inactivity could not be canceled out with an entire hour of exercise.
